Another 4-0 at home as Bulls brush Altach aside with ease!

T-Mobile Bundesliga, Round 26.
Red Bull Salzburg 4–0 Cashpoint SCR Altach (H/T: 2-0).
Goals: Zickler (8., 72.), Janko (41.), Sekagya (80.)

The first must win match of the week has been won! Red Bull Salzburg triumphed today in round 26 of the T-Mobile-Bundesliga. Cashpoint SCR Altach were comprehensively beaten 4-0, the same scoreline as the Bulls’ last home match a fortnight ago against Mattersburg! The win was Salzburg’s eleventh in 13 home games this season.

Trapattoni’s team cruised to a superb victory by pinning their opponents under near constant pressure, creating a whole host of chances and finishing enough of them to fashion a comfortable winning margin. Alex Zickler scored twice a day before his 34th birthday while Janko and Sekagya also got on the scoresheet.

The win came despite Red Bull Salzburg suffering a minor injury crisis: Kovac, Pamic, Aufhauser and Carboni (thigh strain) were all sidelined while Vargas was suspended.

Captain Alex Zickler provided some relief by passing a late fitness test. The line-up: Ochs; Steinhöfer, Sekagya, Meyer, Dudic; Pitak, Leitgeb; Ilic, Jezek; Janko, Zickler.

As the match kicks-off the hosts surge forward immediately, setting the pattern for the rest of the match.

4 minutes: The first good Bulls’ move results in Janko getting on the end of a Dudic cross before being checked by a last-gasp Pfister challenge.

8 minutes: 1-0 to Red Bull Salzburg! A wonderful Steinhöfer weighted ball from the flank is met by Zickler with a bullet header. Altach goalkeeper Krassnitzer has no chance.

That makes goal number 14 of the season for the Salzburg captain just four hours and 22 minutes before his 34th birthday!

The Bulls continue to press as they sense that an early kill to the game is within their grasp.

13 minutes: Good chance for Salzburg as a 20-yard Jezek shot sails a matter of inches past the right post.

24 minutes: Zickler turns provider by crossing to Jezek, whose header is scrambled over the bar by Krassnitzer.

The Red Bull New York players are notable spectators as chance after chance is created. The squad are currently being put through their paces at a Salzburg training camp before facing the Young Bulls on Saturday as a warm-up to the Bulls’ encounter with Innsbruck.

38 minutes: The first real chance for Altach is thwarted on the line by some heroic Sekagya defending.

41 minutes: 2-0 to Red Bull Salzburg! Janko rises above the rest to turn a Jezek corner into the net! Just two minutes later Dudic has a chance to make it 3-0 but this time Krassnitzer saves.

Referee Grobelnik calls time on the first half. The Bulls are in a thoroughly deserved 2-0 lead after a pleasing first 45 minutes marked with a barrage of purposeful play down the flanks that Altach have struggled to counter.

The second period gets underway with Red Bull Salzburg unchanged.

49 minutes: A Leitgeb free-kick is well dealt with by Krassnitzer in the Altach goal.

The Bulls once again push their opponents back and carve out a hatful of chances:

50 minutes: Ilic whacks a ball to Jezek, who instantly fires a shot over the bar.

52 minutes: A beautiful Leitgeb ball puts Ilic through behind the Altach defence. The Serb midfielder glides past Krassnitzer before being thwarted by Fernando Carreno.

Altach then get their best chance of the match as their substitute Mayer seizes advantage of a moment of carelessness in the Salzburg defence to go one-on-one with Timo Ochs. The Altach player hoists the ball over the bar to spare a few blushes (56 mins).

58 minutes: A perfect pass finds Zickler before the German marksman takes the ball round Carreno and cracks a shot a fraction wide. Mayer creates more trouble with a nicely executed long-distance effort that is also close to being on-target (60 mins).

Red Bull Salzburg have another great opening as Ilic is allowed to shoot unchallenged in the Altach area but Krassnitzer is equal to it with a superb save (65 mins)!

Good chance for Altach. A cross from the right is headed over by Chinchilla (68 mins).

72 minutes: 3-0 to Red Bull Salzburg! A short corner allows Steinhöfer to cross into Zickler who makes no mistake for his second headed goal of the evening and his 15th strike of the season!

76 minutes: Red Bull Salzburg make their first substitution. Zickler is showered with applause as he leaves the field to make way for Mahop.

77 minutes: A fantastic Salzburg move sees Mahop feeding Ilic, who turns the Ball onto Janko, who shoots just wide. Shortly afterwards Vonlanthen replaces Jezek for the Bulls.

80 minutes: 4-0 to Red Bull Salzburg! Yet again the ball is headed into the net from a corner! This time Sekagya takes the credit in grabbing his third goal of the season. That was the hosts’ 31st shot of the match, a new Bundesliga record!

81 minutes: Substitution number three for the rampant Bulls: Ilic departs for Knavs.

The hosts shift down a gear in the final few minutes as they seal a superb 4-0 win. The Bulls’ second home win of 2008 is just as convincing as their first!

Alex Zickler: “Apart from a slight twinge here or there I didn’t feel anything of my injury today. We can not be too happy with our finishing in the match however as we could have added a few more.”

Giovanni Trapattoni: “I was expecting my team to put in a good showing. We proved that we are more than strong at home. With a little extra luck we could have had an even bigger win.”
