Salzburg stunned by ÖFB Stiegl Cup defeat to Austria Vienna Amateurs!

ÖFB Stiegl Cup, last sixteen
Red Bull Salzburg 1–2 FK Austria Vienna Amateurs (H/T; 1-1).
Goals: Öbster (43); Schriebl (45), Dimic (92)

Red Bull Salzburg’s run of ÖFB Stiegl Cup failure over recent years was today continued by an embarrassing 1-2 home defeat at the hands of FK Austria Vienna Amateurs. Co Adriaanse’s side thus made an early exit from the competition while Austria Vienna’s second-string side advanced.

A stoppage-time Dimic goal (92 mins) sealed the sensational cup shock in front of 3278 spectators at the Red Bull Arena.

Co Adriaanse used the match to give a few squad players a start and gave three of Salzburg’s Juniors a place on the substitutes bench. The line-up: Arzberger; Dudic, Miyamoto, Gercaliu, Pamic; Vonlanthen, Traoui; Janocko, Tchoyi, Öbster; Mahop.

The cup tie gets underway with a chance for the Bulls. Öbster finds Mahop, who turns the ball towards Vonlanthen. The Swiss midfielder fails to react in time to pounce on the pass (2 mins).

Salzburg continue to press for an early goal:

5 minutes: Pamic charges through on the left side of the field and plays the ball onto Mahop but Korsos is first to the ball and plays it behind for a corner. A Dudic header threatens the visitors’ goal from a corner but Austria goalkeeper Lindner saves comfortably.

11 minutes: Linder is able to clear after a few seconds of commotion in Austria Vienna’s penalty area.

14 minutes: Austria Amateurs threaten for the first time. Schriebl gets the ball on the edge of the penalty area and shoots straight away but Arzberger is waiting to make an easy save.

15 minutes have been played with the Bulls turning up the heat and putting the Vienna side under some serious, sustained pressure.

19 minutes: Öbster is brought down and a free-kick awarded to Salzburg. Janocko curves the ball over the wall but Lindner follows its trajectory to keep it out of the away team’s goal.

Mahop races down on the Austria Vienna Amateur goalkeeper just seconds later but he pulls off a stunning save (19 mins).

The hosts run out of steam after 25 minutes as their constant pressure abates while the visitors increasingly get a foothold into the game.

30 minutes: Salzburg appeal for a penalty when Tchoyi is brought down by Leovac in the area but the referee waves play on.

Just before half-time the pressure finally pays dividends as Red Bull Salzburg take the lead! Öbster seizes the ball on the edge of the penalty area and slots the ball out of the reach of Lindner and inside the far post – 1-0 after 43 minutes!

Austria Vienna Amateurs then equalise straight away! Schriebl charges into the penalty area without any obstruction from a timid Salzburg defence and flicks the ball inside the far post to make it 1-1 at half-time!

49 minutes: Miyamoto defends well to deny the onrushing Mössner with a last-gasp challenge.

The Bulls are penning Austria Vienna Amateurs right back but are lacking the decisive final balls. The visitor’s goalkeeper is keeping his side in the match with a flawless display.

53 minutes: Öbster is booked.

Miyamoto is continuing his excellent defensive display by denying Mössner at every opportunity. The Japanese player is meriting Co Adriaanse’s decision to make him captain for tonight’s match.

65 minutes: Bichelhuber races into the Salzburg penalty area to jar a few nerves in the stands, which are subsequently calmed by Miyamoto with another excellent block.

69 minutes: The Bulls make their first substitution with Nelisse coming on for Janocko.

70 minutes have been played with the match turning mediocre as Salzburg struggle to penetrate their amateur opponents. The fans are airing their displeasure.

74 minutes: The second Red Bulls’ substitution is made with the injured Dudic being replaced by Meyer.

76 minutes: The Bulls have a superb chance to potentially win the game! Tchoyi finds Vonlanthen in the perfect spot but Lidner denies him with yet another superb piece of goalkeeping!

79 minutes: The final RBS substitution is an attacking one with Pamic being replaced by Pitak.

79 minutes: Salzburg are saved by the crossbar as Mössner’s heeled effort finds the woodwork!

The Bulls pile everyone forward as they look for a winner, exposing themselves to counter-attacks at the same time:

85 minutes: Mössner finally gets the better of Miyamoto within firing range of the Salzburg goal but is dispossessed by a last gasp Gercaliu tackle!

90 minutes are up and three minutes of stoppage time are signaled.

92 minutes: Austria Amateurs get a sensational stoppage time goal!!! Dimic weaves his way into the centre without being challenged and dances past Arzberger before pushing the ball home for an incredible 2-1 lead!

And that’s it! A Tuesday night cup shock sees Austria Vienna Amateurs progressing into the Stiegl Cup Quarter Finals at the expense of Red Bull Salzburg . . .

Co Adriaanse: “The stoppage time goal epitomized the whole match for us. We knocked ourselves out with some terrible individual errors. We had plenty of chances to win the match but unfortunately we didn’t use them. There was enough quality in the team to win so that should’nt be an excuse. Being knocked out is very painful.”
